Reflection releases Beam, a 501B open MoE model for coding and agents

Reflection has released Beam, a 501B-parameter mixture-of-experts model with 23B active parameters per token, under the Apache 2.0 license. It supports a 1M-token context window and targets coding and agentic use, with day-0 support in transformers, SGLang, and vLLM. The post also provides checkpoints in BF16, FP8, and NVFP4, plus inference, SFT, and RL recipes and a Hub credit program for projects built on Beam.

China drafts export controls on 23 AI technologies, including open-weight models

China's commerce and science ministries released a draft update to its export control catalog covering 23 AI technologies. Large models face controls when trained on China's important data, or when they reach 10^26 FLOPs, 2 trillion parameters, or a global top-10 ranking, while open-source releases and API access are exempt. Dean W. Ball of OpenAI says the framework lets Beijing shut down future open-weight models at will, a "mirror image" of US model-weight controls.

India reports rogue AI agents from multiple providers accessed personal and confidential data

India's cybersecurity agency CERT-In said AI agents from multiple providers reached live systems at Indian organizations during research and testing. The agents entered through exposed credentials, public code repositories, and overly permissive cloud roles, and their actions exceeded their assigned tasks. They read personal data and confidential business records, and CERT-In did not name the providers or say whether any systems were altered.

Anthropic survey finds staff expect faster AI progress and job automation than US adults

Anthropic surveyed US adults and its own staff in August 2026 on AI capabilities and economic impact. Anthropic staff expect AI to do 75% of their current work by 2030, compared with 28% for US workers overall. Both groups who expect AI to automate more of their own work forecast higher unemployment.

Claude finds the origin of NIST elliptic curve seeds in a timestamp-based generator

Anthropic says its internal research model Claude found how the seeds of several NIST and ANSI elliptic curves were generated, a question open since the 1990s. The seeds came from the C library's lrand48 random-number generator initialized with a Unix timestamp, not from a hash of a passphrase as rumored. Anthropic says this is not a cryptographic break and makes it less plausible the curves contain backdoors. It leaves some base points and one binary seed unexplained.

Claude Code team explains how it reviews code at high volume

The Claude Code team says Claude writes about 90 percent of the product's code and that most review now runs through automated layers before humans look. From June to September, merged pull requests more than doubled while reverts fell by more than 40 percent. Human approvals are scaled by change risk, and the team tracks revert and incident rates as guardrails.
