Google opens Android Studio to third-party coding agents and launches Connected Apps Platform
Overview
Google says Android Studio now lets developers run more than 40 coding agents, including Anthropic's Claude Agent and OpenAI's Codex, through the Agent Client Protocol.
In Google's internal tests, its Android CLI completed UI tasks 77 percent faster and used up to three times fewer tokens. Google also added an alpha Agentic API on Gemini Nano 4 to ML Kit, and the Android Studio Canary preview adds a migration assistant that translates older XML layouts into Jetpack Compose.
Google also launched the Connected Apps Platform, which lets developers reach users in Gemini and Search through a cloud-hosted MCP server or Android MCP using AppFunctions APIs. Developers sign up for the preview at developers.google.com/connected-apps, and Google says access opens in phases. TechCrunch reports the preview is for U.S. developers on a waitlist, and Google did not say when it would be broadly available. Google says more than 50 partner integrations, including Adobe and Peloton, are live in the Gemini app, with Search integrations rolling out in the coming weeks.
