OpenAI plans post-midterm push to rename data centers and offer host communities a say
Overview
OpenAI plans to call its data centers "AI compute campuses" in a policy push starting in the lame-duck session of Congress after the midterms, according to Axios.
The company intends to offer community compacts and propose state legislation giving residents a say in how projects are built and what benefits they receive. OpenAI spokesperson says the term "better describes the scale and role of the infrastructure," and that host communities should "help shape it and share in the opportunities it creates."
Chris Lehane, OpenAI's chief global affairs officer, told Axios the campaign also includes AI "speed limits" and a U.S. role in setting global standards. The Decoder, citing Axios, reports Lehane plans to push binding safety rules for frontier models through 2028.
Joshua Achiam, an OpenAI researcher, says the apparent rename is risky because AI is politically sensitive and the change looks transparent, and he suggests "chipcenters" instead.
