Perplexity launches Teammates AI agents for Max users; Srinivas predicts agent teams for all work
Overview
Perplexity launches Teammates, AI agents that take on jobs and work proactively using Computer tasks, skills, memory, and tools, available now to Max subscribers on the web.
Native mobile and desktop apps are coming soon. The company says Teammates can collaborate with other teammates and message coworkers in Slack. Aravind Srinivas, who owns Perplexity, calls it the first step toward agents that remember users and their organization, learn to work with coworkers, run autonomously, and improve from corrections.
A later Perplexity report says Teammates handle tasks such as deep research, data analysis, QA, ticket triage and code review, and reach out to coworkers without repeated steering. Srinivas says about 10,000 teammates were active in Perplexity's internal workspace in the last 30 days, about 20 times the company's headcount, with about 1,000 active the previous day.
Srinivas predicts most work will shift from one person doing one task at a time to people directing teams of agents, and envisions organizations with hundreds of AI teammates per person.
