Claude Code cuts usage cost of background subagents with Haiku 5.5 status updates
Overview
Anthropic says background subagents in Claude Code now use less of the usage limit.
Each 30-second status update previously re-read the whole conversation; Haiku 5.5 now writes those updates from short notes, which Anthropic says cuts each update's cost by about 99%.
A separate Anthropic post says the change now lets background subagents keep their own model. Sessions using them consumed about 5% less of the usage limit, which Anthropic says gives about 6% more prompts within the same limit. The change is live for most Pro, Max and Ultra users and for everyone on Team and Enterprise, and requires Claude Code v2.1.316 or later.
