NVIDIA adds StormScope EU to open Earth-2 weather models, with European adopters
Overview
NVIDIA adds StormScope EU, a regional version of its StormScope model trained on European weather and climate data, to the open Earth-2 family.
The model predicts cloud conditions across 16 Meteosat channels at 10-minute intervals using EUMETSAT satellite observations. NVIDIA says the open-source PhysicsNeMo framework provides training and customization tools so teams can add proprietary data and domain expertise.
NVIDIA says AXA, Vaisala Xweather, the University of Manchester, TotalEnergies and Space42 are adapting Earth-2 models for cyclone risk, lightning-enhanced forecasts, air-quality modeling, solar-energy forecasting and radar-based height estimation.
AXA researchers used FourCastNet 3, a global Earth-2 forecasting model, to generate more than 1,000 simulated cyclone seasons. NVIDIA says the simulations show where cyclones travel, how often they occur and how storms affect multiple regions in one season, and that AXA can use them in risk assessments and to target customer prevention efforts.
