Microsoft launches Copilot harness in Foundry Agent Service in public preview
Overview
Microsoft introduces the Copilot harness in Foundry Agent Service in public preview, a managed system that runs the agent loop and sandbox for agents defined declaratively.
Developers supply skills, tools and instructions, and the preview includes file and code execution, subagents and source-controlled definitions. Microsoft says Foundry manages the execution environment's CPU, memory and idle settings. During the preview, developers select the Microsoft Copilot harness when creating an agent. Existing agents are unchanged, and switching the harness after creation is not yet supported.
Microsoft says harness runtime usage is free before December 1, 2026, when consumption-based billing begins. Model inference and separately billed tools and connected services remain subject to their own charges.
Satya Nadella says the unified Copilot harness is now in Foundry, a managed service for building long-running agents, as part of GitHub updates announced at Universe. Nadella's post does not state a separate launch date.
