OpenRouter launches Auto Router and Auto Code model routers
Overview
OpenRouter launches a new Auto Router for general Q&A and agents, and Auto Code for coding agents, set by model name openrouter/auto or openrouter/auto-code.
The company says Auto Code scores in line with Claude Opus 5.5 across five benchmarks while costing 74% less per task, and that Auto Router's p90 latency is 0.65s, against 1.96s for the previous version in a live test. Users pay the standard price of whichever model serves the request, and the response's model field shows which one it was.
OpenRouter says Auto Router still picks the cost-optimal model when customers restrict the models they can use for regional, data retention, or other policy reasons. It says every model added to OpenRouter is immediately considered by Auto Router, which uses benchmarks and popularity signals to choose its recommended set. In a beta, OpenRouter says the router showed 4x fewer invalid tool calls, a 50% reduction in cut-off agentic responses, and 3x lower latency than the previous router. The company says Auto Router handles over 2.5T tokens from more than 100k people each month.

The company says many customers have guardrails based on regional, data retention, or other policies.
