Databricks launches Genie Ontology to infer business context for AI queries
Overview
Databricks introduces Genie Ontology, a feature that infers relevant business context across an organization's data and assets so AI can answer open-ended questions without a fully built ontology.
According to Databricks' social media post, a component called OntoRank chooses which context to trust.
In a later post, Databricks says it built Genie Ontology to teach AI what each business metric means, which sources are authoritative, and what each person may see. The company says AI that queries data without that understanding gives faster wrong answers. In a video discussion with Advancing Analytics, Databricks says certified assets still matter for data governance. These claims come from Databricks' own posts and video; none of the sources independently demonstrates how accurate the inferred context is in practice.
