Gergely Orosz recalls being told to cut back on conference talks

AISummary

Gergely Orosz says that in the late 2010s his skip-level manager told him to cut back on conference talks, after he gave about four in a year on the company's behalf. He says the manager was reacting to senior colleagues who claimed he was not doing his work, which he disputes. Orosz notes that most companies today would want employees to speak at conferences.

Just thinking back how, in the late 2010s I was pulled aside by my skip level, who told me I was doing too many talks at conferences (representing the company - I did ~4 in a year) and he strongly suggests I cut back on it.

And reflecting how today, most companies would WANT this

I struggled to understand the reasoning at first, but turns out that more senior folks complained to this person how I probably wasn't doing my work (which I was) and the skip level just did not want conflict
