Why hardware specialization is back
AIEugene Brooks predicted in 1990 that general-purpose microprocessors would overwhelm specialized machines, and by the mid-1990s many specialist architectures had shut down. The article argues that general-purpose chips won through a cycle in which volume drove performance and performance drove generality.
