AI coding tools save developers time but flood open source maintainers with low-quality pull requests
AIA Linux Foundation survey finds generative AI cut open source code-authoring time by 52 percent on average, but respondents estimate a quarter of incoming pull requests are low-quality "AI slop." Only 35 percent of projects have a formal policy permitting GenAI use, while 32 percent have no policy and no plans for one. The curl project says its maintainers are strained by AI-assisted security reports and will make low and medium severity flaws public.
