The Porch Light: How I Created a Halloween Short Film in Adobe Firefly
Every Halloween, she turns on the porch light, sets out the candy and waits.
Year after year, no one comes. Her hair grows gray and the candy bowl remains full. Still, she leaves the light on.
But someone has been watching from the attic window.
The Porch Light is a little Halloween story about loneliness, kindness and an unexpected connection. It's about a woman who never gives up hope and a small ghost who decides to make one Halloween different.
I created this 84-second short film entirely within Adobe Firefly, working with the Firefly AI Assistant (beta) and several of Firefly's creative tools to bring the story from an idea to a finished film.
What made this experience particularly interesting was the back and forth between working with the AI Assistant and making my own creative adjustments as the film took shape.
Finding the characters and building their world
I began by bringing my story to the Firefly AI Assistant (beta). From there, the Assistant helped transform the narrative into a visual storyboard, developing the characters, locations and progression of the story across three different Halloweens.
One of the important details was showing the passage of time. The same woman returns to the same porch each Halloween, a little older, her appearance subtly changing while her hope remains.
Once the initial images were generated, I moved into Firefly Boards to review the storyboard more closely.
Having everything together on one canvas allowed me to see how the scenes worked as a whole. I could compare the characters, examine the surroundings and identify images that needed further refinement.
I made the necessary corrections in Boards, refining the images and establishing a more consistent visual foundation before moving into animation.
Three Halloweens and a little magic
The same porch, three Halloweens and a woman who grows a little older each year. Her changing hair and clothing tell us what we need to know, while the familiar setting reinforces the ritual of waiting.
Until our little ghost decides to intervene.
Leaving the attic behind, the ghost travels through the neighborhood, illuminating the streetlamps one by one and bringing a group of trick or treaters to her door.
I love the simplicity of that moment. Something as small as a ghost turning on a few lights becomes an act of kindness that changes someone's entire evening.
Once the Assistant had generated the video sequences, I brought them into the Firefly video editor, arranging the individual clips and building the story's pacing.
Working through the edit gave me the opportunity to shape how each moment connected to the next, from the slower opening scenes to the warmth and excitement of the children's arrival.
Finding the voices and sounds of Halloween
With the visuals assembled, it was time to give the film its atmosphere.
I returned to the Firefly AI Assistant to generate the music and sound effects. Together, these elements would help create the quiet neighborhood, the anticipation of Halloween and the magical turn the story eventually takes.
An old light switch clicking on. A creaking front door. Streetlamps flickering to life. Children laughing as they run toward the house. Even the tiny sound of a piece of candy landing on a wooden step.
These little details add texture to the world and help make the scenes feel alive.
The Assistant generated the music and sound effects, but I wanted to take a more hands-on approach with the dialogue, so I turned to Firefly Generate Speech to shape the characters' voices and their delivery.
There are only three lines of dialogue in The Porch Light:
"I can't wait to see all the trick or treaters."
"Maybe this year."
"This one is for you."
Each line carries a different emotion, moving from excitement to quiet hope and finally to a moment of happiness and connection.
I experimented with the Jennifer voice, lowering the pitch and slowing the delivery to make the voice sound older, while using emotional tone tags such as [excited], [hopeful] and [happy] to shape each delivery.
It's a small amount of dialogue, but those subtle changes in expression help tell a much bigger story.
I then layered and adjusted the dialogue, music and sound effects across six audio tracks in the Firefly video editor, balancing everything to complement the visuals.
Sound can completely change how we experience an image. A quiet scene can feel hopeful or lonely depending on what we hear, while the smallest sound effect can give an animated moment a little more life.
Bringing those elements together was one of my favorite parts of finishing the film.
A story brought together through collaboration
What I particularly enjoyed was being able to move so easily between the different tools within Adobe Firefly. Having everything connected made it simple to refine images, develop new material and continue building the film as the story evolved.

As an Adobe Firefly Ambassador, I value the opportunity to explore these tools and share the creative process behind my work. The Porch Light was a chance to experiment with the Firefly AI Assistant and turn a simple story into a finished film. Sharing those discoveries and the decisions along the way is one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.
And somewhere in that process, an idea about a lonely woman and a little ghost became a complete Halloween film.
What I love most about The Porch Light is that beneath the Halloween costumes, glowing pumpkins and playful magic, there's a very simple story.
Sometimes the smallest act of kindness can make someone feel cared for.
